How do I disable search and browsing history in chrome?

I'm a saavy computer user, but found this shockingly difficult.

I want to completely disable browsing history and search data. No autofill searches on drop downs, or when entering URLs, blue links, etc.

I know I can clear the history, but I want a more permanent solution.
