Ask News.YC: Difference between web app business and open source?

I've been thinking about the difference between a web app business, an open source project (such as the ones you can find on sourceforge), and just a hack. I imagine the difference between a hack and the other two is that a hack is on a smaller scale, but where do you draw the line of the first two? Any ideas?
