Ask HN: Move from web development to systems programming
Long story short I was working on a LAMP stack for almost a decade doing both frontend and backend development and at this point I find my self bored to death and in a desperate need for a change.
I have a degree in computer science and generally I'm more interested in low level stuff and general CS subjects so me ending up as a web dev was a huge mistake I think.
At this point I want to transition to systems programming and I would appreciate any advice on the best way to approach this.
My current plan is to leave job and do intense self study full time for ~6 months. During that period I plan to do some oss development as well to have something real to show to my potential employer.
Is this too crazy or doable? If it's doable what would you advice to concentrate on? My current reading list covers: C, Algorithms, Unix programming. I try to concentrate on general problem solving rather than some specific area.
