Ask HN: Best way to (technically) produce an ebook?

Hi guys, i was wondering what the best way to produce an ebook is. Imagine there a mixture of plain text and a fair amount of source code and images.

* How do you author the book? Word? Latex? Any of the 5 gazillion other tools available?

* What tools do you use to reliably produce a good looking mobi/epub/pdf file from that authoring source?
