Ask HN: New here, could somebody answer some questions?

So im new here, and mostly user reddit. I keep reading articles here but never commented etc. So wanted to know what kind of people hang out over here, and similar to reddit, does asking people to check out your app/startup/etc a bad thing over here, or its okay, if you have enough 'karma' etc?
