Ask HN: Joining Whatsapp team good for career growth?
Premise: Since Whatsapp has been acquired for $16B and they have to justify that acquisition to FB, they will be working on a variety of projects : more features, integrating of payment systems, Ads (?), Analytics, generally scaling infastucture etc. This means the team size will have to grow. For someone who joins the company now in individual role, since the team is still small, chances are as these projects evolve, the individual may get to become a manager or senior manager more easily than in more established companies. Similarly, since he will be growing, pay is also like to raise more compared to established companies. Assume the software engineer is very good at his work
I would like to know from esteemed HN community if my thinking is correct or if its flawed. I want to grow into a mid-level manager ASAP. I have 7+ yrs experience in a large non-internet related company..
Also, If we draw parallels with Google's Android acquisition, What happened to the early team members there? Did they grow into managerial roles or did Google force managers from outside teams?
