Ask HN: Functional programming before imperative?

Hey guys, I'm currently a CS student trying to figure out functional programming (OCaml). For most of what we have to do, I come up with a simple imperative solution, and struggle to come up with the functional solution. Of course, I started out with imperative languages (C, ObjC, Java, etc) before learning functional.

Wondering if anyone got started with functional before learning imperative? How might that change the way we learn to code? Would the transition from functional to imperative be easier than imperative to functional?
