Navy hydrophone network and search for missing plane?
The US Navy used to have a fairly extensive network of underwater hydrophones, used for tracking Soviet subs. They have more recently been used by researchers interested in tracking whales. Seems to me that if a plane came down hard i the ocean, that would generate a fairly large sound event that might have been picked up by their networks?
