Ask HN: Does Steve Gibson have a good rep in the valley as a security expert?

My colleague listens to all of his podcasts and seems holds him in high regard.

A google search for "Steve Gibson security" shows the 4th result as "Steve Gibson is a fraud!"

He's listed at http://attrition.org/errata/charlatan/steve_gibson/ too.

The talk on his wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Steve_Gibson_(computer_programmer)) seems to indicate a lot of controversy about what he actually does.

But as my colleague has claimed that he is well respected in the valley, I'd love to know what you guys and gals think
