I would use GWT for any big webapp. tooling is way better for java than for js. having the same model on server and on a client is a huge plus as well.
If you like this sort of thing, and are on a Mac, you have Quartz Composer available, which I find fun to play with and which is actually pretty powerful.

Among other things, you can make your own screensaver, and have access to various inputs and outputs such as the built in camera, mic, URL's, etc.
