Ask HN: To what extent resources created using photoshop are used in ios apps?

I am just starting on iOS development. Photoshop is extensively used when designing iOS apps. Is this used just as prototyping tool? Are the resources created using photoshop like fancy buttons and other interface components actually used in Apps?
