Ask HN: Second-page link format

Noticed this on several previous occasions: the link for second-page results sometimes points to '/news2' and others to the same third-page+ format (i.e. /x?fnid=...). Is there some pattern for this or is it just random?

Update: '/news2' still works and appears to have the same results as the paged-link on the homepage.
