Ask HN: How did your revenue-generating side project come about?

The recent side project for sale thread got me thinking about how each particular side project was started. Some people are from the "scratch your own itch" camp, others from the lean/customer dev line of thinking. In short, I want to work on a small project that could potentially earn a few hundred bucks per month, but am having trouble choosing an idea.
