I discovered Kieth and the Girl back in 2006 and have been listening to them every day since. They are a case study waiting to be written. The community that they have developed is crazy. They make money from live shows, where people come from all over the world to attend. The fact that they have something like 45 fans who have tattoed themselves is incredible.

Think about that for a second...fans are tattooing themselves. How many Howard Stern fans have tattoos? I would love to see a long form interview with them about their community, how they built it, and how it has changed over time.

I did think about it. And now that the trauma is over, I'm glad that online radio people aren't forcibly tattooing their listeners.

Keith and The Girl have a fantastic podcast but it's amazing how small podcasting is relative to the size of the iPhone/iPod market. iTunes makes it pretty easy to subscribe and listen yet the market isn't growing much (if at all). You even see low conversion from radio personalities that move to podcasting.

Still these guys have a large dedicated fan base as you can see from this guy willing to branding himself.

They have an app that a fan built, for free apparently, which has alerts and updates, and streams the show. Wow.
hmmm... might have to check out the podcast, but I can't help but think the guy getting the brand has poor impulse control. Good luck explaining why you thought this was a good idea when you're 60. I don't know who to credit, but I once heard someone say that getting a tattoo (or a branding) was like getting bell bottoms stapled to your legs.
He spent a few months researching it and finding the guy to do the branding. It wasn't just a drunk night out.

Still, you have a point. Is spending a few months deciding on something so permanent enough time? Hopefully we can ask him in a 5 or 10 years.
