Ask HN: How do I give founders shares to offshore developer?

I hired a freelance developer from Russia several years ago and over the years we have built a great relationship. I'd like to reward him by giving him an ownership stake in a new startup I'm going to launch. I have no idea how to go about setting this up or whether this presents unique legal problems. Does anyone have experience with something like this?
