Ask HN: Web Devs, how long until you considered yourself proficient?

Hello, I am CS major with about a year left until I graduate. In the last 6 months or so I have taken a liking to web development. I started learning JS with Backbone and also over the last month I have been learning RoR. The more I learn the more I realize I don't know. How long was it until you felt comfortable with you dev skills? I am currently trying to make a mobile app with a rails api and backbone for the front end and at some points I feel overwhelmed. I very much enjoy it but there are times I get discouraged that there is just too much I don't understand. I am just curious about some of your experiences down this road.
