Ask HN: How to work in the Biotechnology industry as a CS student?

I am about to complete an internship at the NIH, and absolutely loved my job working in Bioinformatics. I'd like to continue working in this field after I graduate next year. (MS in Computer Science)

Unfortunately my biology and chemistry knowledge are minimal. Right now I'm trying to make up by reading books on organic chemistry and genetics.

Is there demand for programmers in the field? What skills are they expected to have? I can easily get a job as a web developer, but how does one get a job as a programmer in the biotech/medical field?
