Ask HN: Some advices for my life

2 points by Reameral ↗ HN
I just turned 22, studying CS and earning enough money with freelancing for living - I should be happy how my life turned out (yet) or? This was always the idea of my future life - learning and getting paid for something I like (programming).

Recently someone spontaneously asked me what my goals are, but I had no answer. This got me thinking because there has never been a point in my life where I had no goals. Without goals I can't be sure if it's the right thing I am doing - so I am questioning everything everyday and have no clear answer.

But that's not the only thing I am worrying about. When I started with programming I was fascinated and spend all my holidays learning programming. Now I am struggling to find enough motivation to really dig into something new (e.g. for side projects). I feel tired and overwhelmed when I am learning and that scares me - because I always loved learning something new and I want to get better.

And one last thing… I always feel dumb because I am not able to express what I really want to say. You probably see this from my writing style (reason for grammar mistakes: i am not native) but I am just not able to say my thoughts precisely. Most people suggest me to read more but I don't know which books, I don't like novels and getting tired from reading (seriously).

What should I do? I appreciate every advice, thanks! (If everything I wrote was too confusing to you, please ask)

Welcome to the world of SELF DEVELOPMENT. One of the books I read this summer (audible acutally) was, Black Hole Focus http://www.amazon.com/Black-Hole-Focus-Intelligent-Powerful/...

Deals with a lot of the stuff you are mentioning, such as finding a purpose and defining your goals. But it also goes deeper, because you probably don't really know who you are at this point, (just my anecdotal experience with being 22 years old some years ago) this book helps you discover that as well.

Thank you, I just bought it, very curious how it will help!
Cool! reply back when you have read it, would like to know what you thought about it.
The first ~40% of the book were really interesting to me because he had the same problems and thoughts. The rest of the book was too much repetition from the first part.

After reading it, I know I need goals in my life and need to write them down. But I still have no idea which goals I have and what would be the best way to find them. I hope my goals will be clearer in the next few months after thinking about them more often ;)

Great! Knowing is half the battle, but don't let it lead to anxiety about finding the one true goal! It does not really exist.
