Poll: After FTDI, How should software react in presence of counterfeit hardware?

Ok, so FTDI have set an unusual precedent. Their new windows driver actively disables fake chipsets when it discovers them. But does so seemingly silently. I am interested in finding HN's views on this, and anyway, I have not seen a poll here for years.
