Should a person without programming experience learn C# or Java?

Hello,

I have a friend that works in the restaurant industry that wants to learn to program and eventually be a developer type. He is 30 and only has the time to head the Java or .NET route, not both.

Which would you recommend?

He's in the Indianapolis market and is interested in web development and possibly pursing robotics.

Any input is valuable!
