Ask HN: How can I still be a developer in my 50s or 60s?
40+ developer here. I have been doing freelance work almost all of my working life. I love being a developer and would not want anything else. Recently I'm also working remotely and I can say that works perfectly for me.
Having said that I'm worrying about the second half of my career. Will I be still able to do this in my 50s or 60s? How can I make sure I'll continue finding those jobs?
The thing is I'm a Java backend dev without really any specialization. I got interested in Haskell and scaling systems but don't think my CV stands out in any way (my employers however are usually very happy with my work).
Should I specialize? How? Should I try to get a permanent position (I wouldnt mind if I still can work mostly remotely)? Should I focus more on my public profile (github, blog etc) which is not much so far?
To those 50+ here, are you still developer? How did you manage that?
Any feedback appreciated.
