I'm a jiu jitsu instructor. A choke held for that short of a period of time is not dangerous.

Mr. Garner, may he rest in peace, likely died of an asthma attack or some other complication from the stress of the encounter.

Chokes are one of the safest ways to control and restrain an individual as long as it is not continued to be held after the person is unconscious.

Mr. Garner screamed many times that he can't breathe (you can see it in the video). Maybe choke held is considered a safe way to control and restrain in jiu jitsu or other forms of martial arts, but Mr. Garner was not an athlete and that was not a fight, that was an arrest.

When he was screaming that he can't breath and he was already on the ground, unarmed and was being arrested for non-violent crime (selling cigarettes), they should have loosened choke held. IMHO it is just a common sense. He was on the ground and surrounded by several armed men, what he possibly could have done to harm them, if they let his throat free?

Your contention differs with the coroner report. Homicide.
