Ask HN: How does the Workflow iOS app work?

I've never seen an app before that can launch other apps--I was always under the impression that to get apps to interact with each other, you had to jailbreak your iPhone. Is this some clever use of incorporating IFTTT into a regular Objective C or Swift app?
