Why Google won't fix a security bug that's in almost a billion Android phones (engadget.com)

Note: This is a bug on an outdated OS that is no longer supported by Google. This is no worse than Apple not patching iOS 4.

Just because its an old version and hard to support doesnt mean they should stop supporting all together. What do they expect us to do with our phones? Throw them out?
