While I agree that this is a serious issue, and I applaud your concern, I question whether it truly belongs on HN.
Also consider, those parents that mistakenly bring back plastic to feed their chicks, will have no offspring. Those that instinctively bring back real food will have offspring that survive. Perhaps it can be considered evolution in action.
Even so, it's deplorable, something should be done, but it's not really Hacker News.
Basically there's an area of the Pacific Ocean that's twice the size of Texas riddled with plastic trash. There are some investigations into potential cleanups, though it's a really big problem and somewhat dwarfed in importance by other ecological issues.
