Ask HN: Best way of approaching social groups?

What is the best way (based on experience / research / statistic / etc) of approaching a small (2) / medium (3-5) and large (6<) social groups without making it awkward? What is the best conversation starter? What is a good strategy given some discussion is already in progress? Anything else to think about?
