Re: this guy's suicide, it's not normal. Most of us have an insatiable will to live. He's a child in 47 year olds body who never grew up. Even in his Facebook post, he hints that he will 'hang on' if a cure is coming next week.
Like any of us have control over that. It's a kid's point of view.
But like a lot of emotionally stunted programmers, he never learned how to be an adult.
I think most people only live a couple of years after they're diagnosed. It's a pretty "effective" disease. There's no cure coming in the next week and he knows it.
Speaking of emotionally stunted programmers, I wish we could figure out how to cure that. HN seems to draw them all in, and they just add a lot of noise. You've only been here a week and you've got a -9 karma. Ever think that it might be you?
Wouldn't it be more interesting to take deeper dives into understanding these issues?
He's a heroic human being IMO, and much wiser than his 47 years. I recommend reading through some of his blog to get a full picture of the fight he and his strong family has put up against ALS, but here's one of the better thoughts he shared:
"I hope that my life stands testimony to the resilience of the human spirit, which cannot be killed, even when the mind is trapped in a body unable to lift a single finger in protest. And that even in a world that at times seems harsh and uncaring, that that same spirit grows ever stronger, vigilant against the injustices in the world, ever watchful for the joys it can bring to its fellow man, ever hungry for the simple pleasures to be found in life."
He has helped to make the world a much better place in his short time, giving much more than he's taken. His presence will be missed greatly by me and the many others to whom he's been a mentor and inspiration.
