Ask HN: Open Source Technology Database?

Is anyone aware of a open source technology database? In other words, a resource in which you can search for a particular type of technology and get a set of descriptors, specs, drawings, models, inheritance, etc. I am envisioning something similar to the US patent database, only more ubiquitous and usable.

If not, do any hackers see the value that I do in this?
