Why so cynical? Is there no value in notifications on your wrist? Is there no value in keeping your phone in your pocket at the dinner table? Every major selling point of the Apple Watch is true of my Pebble and we're inseparable but maybe I'm a sucker for gimmicks. What's the gimmick exactly?

What's the difference between being distracted by a phone at the dinner table and glancing to the watch ?
If I'm at the dinner table and ignore the notifications in my pocket, I won't easily reach for the phone this way. On my hand though it will vibrate/chirp away and knowing it's "just a glance away" I'll be more easily distracted.
My pebble has been very easy to ignore. Just like anything else in the background, I know it's there but it doesn't break my attention unless I allow it. It's also been the quickest way for me to stop an incoming call from disrupting a conversation.

Most people don't wear watches, and if you need your phone for it to work anyway it's not an improvement to have 2 devices for the same exact functions.
If you wear a watch, yeah, the Apple watch does more than your watch does. But beating literally only telling time isn't really masterful innovation.
The gimmick is that it's a "computer on your wrist! like in james bond!!". It's perfect for the Gen X and Y people who grew up watching superheroes and spies use them in TV shows and movies.
It doesn't do anything particularly well, except tell time. For its price, you can actually get a damn nice real watch.
That's not been my experience. It helps maintain a separation between my attention and digital noise. It is a real watch. You're oddly bitter about a technology existing, almost sorry I asked.
