Attracting developers to your project
One of the first challenges a start-up founder faces is attracting developers to work on their codebase. Students are a great resource for this, since they are also looking for some "cool" project to work on. One way a founder can create a connect with students is to create experimentation tools based around their technology so that students can experiment with it. Students are very familiar with experiments. Couching your technology in that light through open source is one way of creating ways for students interested in your area to find you.
This is a win-win for both the founder and the student. But, as a founder, you have to present your project more in an experimental light and less as a well planned and executed project with it's i's dotted and its t's crossed out.
