Medium Referral Analytics

I am wondering if anyone has a detailed explanation of what the "email, IM, and direct" numbers come from in the Medium.com referrer analytics. Does email mean that this referral came from a clicked link in an email that was sent from Medium or just some other email? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.
