Ask HN: What are the unique challenges of hardware startups?

I have been developing software throughout my career. In my spare time, I'm working on ideas that have the potential to become a consumer robotics company. I can see that I'll need to experiment a lot even with the purely mechanical parts. I love tinkering with physical stuff (and code!) but have no academic qualifications in anything other than software. What advice do you have for me?
