Ask HN: Should I open source my product?

Hey guys so there are larger competitors in my niche who have open sourced their product or made it free.

I worked on my own product for a few years now full time, and have a huge emotional weight attached to it and afraid of letting it go for free, at least my lizard brain is telling me that.

but I wonder if there are any upsides to justify outsourcing the product? Wouldn't I be just cannabalizing myself?

there's also development costs involved with cleaning things up, writing documentation etc, but I'm unable to get any resources to do that. It would be so cool if I lived in the states start a kickstarter or something.
