Personalization
The generic design of today's gadgets leave so many design controls with the gadget manufacturers that the resulting end user experience becomes too generic which results in a lemming effect where everyone just goes after "well engineered" generic designs. Of course the economies of large scale that generalization enables help bring down cost. But, we should no longer be looking at cost as the primary driver of product quality. The lemming effect results in several negative side effects such as gadget addiction and information overdose. The answer to this is to build gadgets from the ground up, personalized to the needs of their users.
