Breaking into robotics / UAV

I'm relatively recently out of undergrad (1 year) and i'd really like to get into this field. It's where my passion lies. During my free time I've developed (from my perspective) an impressive 3d vision algorithm using structured light patterns. This algorithm could easily integrate into autonomous navigation systems using SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping). SLAM is used within robotics to allow a robot to autonomously map and navigate it's environment.

I'd really like to further my career in this direction. What else can I do to make myself more attractive to potential employers? Should I go ahead and implement SLAM within my own framework? Any advice?
