Ask HN: How to decide between Industry and Academia?
I'm a senior Computer Science student. I'm young and still can't figure out if I want to stay in Academia or in Industry. I think my case is very complicated. I love both Academia and Industry. I keep asking myself the same question everyday:
"What excites me more?
a) Being a good scientist, doing research in a nice lab/university. Doing some publications, talks, lectures.
b) Being a good Engineer/Dev. I can work in a small startup or a big one like Google."
Probably most will say "Try both sides, see what you prefer". Well, that's the thing. I work in a great startup as a software engineer intern already, people in there say I'm a good dev and that I have a nice potential, also, I >love< working there.
Also, I work part-time as a research assistant in a lab at my university. My adviser says that I have potential and I do a good research (Also I have a few publications with this adviser).
At the beginning of this "dual life" I was doing great, I was accomplishing things... but now I feel I'm doing 50% of the job of each job. I'm not giving 100% of me to just one, so I'm not being great in any, and that disturbs me a lot.
I have little time to decide this, because in a few months I can:
1. apply to a masters/phd program in a good university (which, probably, will demand full-time)
2. apply to a good company (full-time as well)
And it's so hard to decide. How do you guys did this? I know it can be a little easier when you are great in one or you love one of these sides, but what to do when you love both sides?
Thanks in advance.
