Never. Vim is all I use for editing.

Sometimes, you're connecting across the country via dialup and you just really don't feel like waiting on vi.

Alternately, you've screwed up the settings on your Plan 9 box and must use ed to change them in console mode :)

And in those situations, I just use tramp :)
