The speculation about future evolution of bacteria that can digest plastic by using similar enzymes was thought provoking. The actual paper is open access as well and the 'extended pdf' has introductory material that I…
Use of the passive voice is a giveaway. People seem to write as if these are large corporate projects with managers and all, not volunteer driven.
Just wondering if MacOS people have looked at Eastgate Systems' Tinderbox application? I was a happy user back just after the Millennium. (For me on Linux it is a directory full of text files with markdown and sometimes…
Was at work today so late in. To add to JKCalhoun's post, magnetic recording is pretty non-linear with a marked threshold. So a 'bias' signal strong enough to overcome the threshold was added to the current from the…
The tape recorder's manual is available with circuit diagrams [1] and more pictures [2]. I'm not seeing an hf bias oscillator in the circuit unless the manufacturers are being clever. It was half track mono with two…

Debian Trixie Gnome 48 or so. In Settings | Multitasking right down the bottom there is App Switching with two options: 'Include Apps from all workspaces' and 'Include Apps from the current workspace only'. Debian has…
Hang on, 105 800 / 46 = $2300 per machine. Good heavens, when I was partially responsible for hardware refreshes in a UK public sector organisation with around a thousand endpoint PCs we budgeted something like £600 a…
Amateur bread baker here. Ships three times a week from Halifax docked at Birkenhead's grain elevator. The flour was then transferred to the mill over the road. British wheat flour (refined) at that point in history…

The last point in the OA about rounding the estimate of the time spent on the assigned tasks. Just wondering if the response would depend on the wording of the instructions to participants and the nature of the…
OA makes no mention of Fred Hoyle's 'three hours with a calculator' to check Hawkins figures (and being generally unimpressed). Also nothing about the Thoms (Alexander and Archie) who surveyed many other stone circles,…
> Calculus: The Princess of Mathematics by H.C.Verma et al. Garudalife have a store on Abebooks, so available in the UK at under £12 per volume (each circa 340 pages) but inevitably £18 postage. These look interesting…
My understanding is that the cod fishery decline in Atlantic waters has had limited recovery because the ecological niche that the cod fish occupied has been taken over to some extent by a small shark species. The…
All true, but I can't help pointing out that the code name for this new OS came from Plan Nine from Outer Space, a film (which I gather the gang went to watch and found hilarious, although it appears that the film was…
Interesting comment, but I'm thinking of the time scales involved. Farming 6 to 8 thousand years ago, simultaneous development in several areas. Before that millennia of hunter-gatherers (with technologies thrown in…
Perhaps 'Error' in tasteful smoked glass overlay, but with a QR code that encodes an error number? (Spent some time last year supporting students online - noone was going to take a screen shot of their laptop so we…
Your comment stopped me in my tracks a little bit. Is a 'bias' in a piece of writing generally a property of word to word choice and sentence to sentence construction or is it something more nebulous? Especially in…
Have a look at MWM (Motif Window Manager). Colour icons (gasp) and windows that actually maximise. Packaged in Debian so I suppose around in Arch repositories somewhere.
twm still around but might be a separate package these days and not in X11 core. CWM (Calm Window Manager) from OpenBSD is available in portable form and packaged for Debian. Very light and good for tiny screens (little…
Lab book with numbered pages and dated entries for semi-thought out specifications when it gets serious? But there needs to be a level of scribbling on whiteboards/backs of envelopes/napkins before that stage?
Yes, I'd echo thanks to parent, the OA and all still in the trenches. Since 2007 in my case which is when I started using Linux at home. The distributions I use come with Firefox as the Web browser (Ubuntu, Debian and…
Thanks for posting that, I'd never heard of it. I thought of n(n-1)/2 and coordination issues initially but nah.
antiX linux v26 might be of interest. I have the 32 bit version with the older Linux kernel (5.18.x I recollect) on a live usb. No mysterious graphics freezes. The more straight forward (and 64 bit) candidate would be…
