You are forgetting that we could "travel faster than light" using an Alcubierre Drive [1][2], or something similar. i.e. bending space so that our path is now shorter even though in our local space we are not traveling…
Except we still don't know enough about physics to know if this is true. So far this is only a hypothesis that has never been proven.
