One thing that stands out to me is the incorrect use of the word "law" when referring to flight modes. Is this just a bad translation? Are any native French speakers familiar with the Airbus documentation able to…
LXD is only available via Ubuntu proprietary Snap packages and not native .deb packages. Native as in Ubuntu is a Debian derivative, and .deb packages are the native package for Debian. Snap has some downsides for…
Here it is in real life https://youtu.be/hmkMTKZt9J4 Its interesting to see how much trouble it has making a simple turn. The doubled up tracks seem to be a mobility disadvantage.
I always liked this early definition of DevOps: "Giving developers operational responsibilities has greatly enhanced the quality of the services, both from a customer and a technology point of view. The traditional…
Whats missing is an analysis of why CentOS failed. I think Rocky Linux needs to put out a plan how they will make themselves financially viable as we've had 3 high profile RHEL respins go down in the last 10 years.…
For a counter argument, I don't think M1 is going to disrupt anything. Its a great performer for sure, but its locked to a proprietary and closed ecosystem controlled by a single entity. Its a new direction for Apple in…
Apple stood up to the US government's requests to decrypt devices but capitulated to China's request to remove an image of another country's flag. This is scarey.
Whats bothering me? I guess the inability of anyone to have a usable discussion on the lack of strategic planning in initiatives like this... Holy cow I wish I had never "spoken up" in the first place.
Cop out? Its the truth. Infrastructure can be upgraded but today it isn't. There is no plan to upgrade infra!
Swap was a great idea, but its time is gone. Swap doesn't make sense anymore, hard drives have not scaled and kept up with the improvements in RAM. In the Pentium 1 era EDO RAM maxed out at 256MB/s and hard disk xfer…
I never heard of Oulu before so I did a bit of research: Avg temperature -14c in Jan to 19c in July. Avg precipitation 19mm April to 65mm August. Avg windspeed <10mph year round. UV index +4 in July (50% cloud cover).…
Consider this scenario: you're shifting up from 1st gear and forget what gear you're in. If you're in 3rd gear its safe to shift up and to the right. If you're in 5th gear its not safe, up and to the right is reverse! I…
You've somewhat proven how poor this shifter design is because you didn't realize it is for a 5 speed transmission!
Another horrible shifter is Toyota's. Take a look here: http://imgur.com/a/9ShAC First gear is all the way down and to the right. Then left for 2nd, up and left for 3rd, up for 4th, right (!!!) for 5th (aka drive). Now…
The problem with "newish" features like capabilities, file attributes, SElinux is they haven't been integrated into the traditional nix utilities and almost nobody knows what is going on with them. A few examples of the…
Is there an anti-pattern for this kind of thing? Its a two line bug report suggesting years of development effort. There is a huge multiplication factor between the time invested by the bug reporter and the time…

Unix has a long tradition of doing a `rm -rf /` before reinstalling a system. I don't agree with the people saying "don't do that". It worked safely before, it should still be safe to do. (yes I know about…
I think push is better understood if you realize its an operator. At a higher level what is happening is you are adding "item2" (and another "item2") to the array @list. ie @list += ("item2", "item2")
This is the perfect video to show why you don't do live demos (starting around 15:30). Record the demo beforehand to a video (swf or similar) and play that back.
I have a different theory. Originally Docker was going to be a container and CoreOS was a platform to run containers. They were both pieces in a traditional software stack. Docker had a round of funding and the…
I heard this and installed OpenBSD on my thinkpad only to find out there is no support for nVidia. I suppose you need ATI or Intel video to get a working X. There is a brief warning about nVidia here:…
We are in the middle of deracking and throwing out (no kidding) some 3+ year old machines at my work. Care to take a guess at what a 3+ year old machine's specs are? Cause I know you don't have a chance at getting it…
I have only met a small handful of people who can pronounce "kilometre" correctly. I don't think this made the language though ... KILL-o-metre
