But, it is flawed -- simply because its so incomplete. There's simply too much we have absolutely no clue about and we have a lot of gaps that don't neatly add up. Our ignorance is vast. This is partly to do with our…
This is actually quite interesting but sadly not entirely surprising.
DOS was (is) a loose collection of small (optional) utilities, a tiny bootloader (IO.SYS) and a limited command interpreter -- command.com and the bootloader was all that was strictly necessary: hardly a "heart". Memory…
You would have to be insane to even think like this.
You can install minimal (mini or server) then add just what you want when you want it. And yes, you've always been able to build your own distros with as much or as little as you like.
Paid up-front for a nice Android phone just over a year ago and shopped around and found a £10 a month deal -- 250 talk minutes (which I never use), unlimited texts and unlimited data (I can also tether it to my laptop…
I've surprised myself by actually liking it. A lot.
In the UK LSD is prescribable by a consultant for certain intractable conditions but you need a Home Office license to do it. It appears capable of curing chronic migraine (one dose apparently) though no one knows how.…
I like RandomPlay or CMUS in preference to iTunes. Their randomness is more suited to my collection. Both on Linux and OS X. But what I love more than anything is listening to the playlist on FiP, any time of the day.…

Apple has officially, unmistakeably and categorically jumped the shark.
I have often thought that statistically most astronauts are quite long-lived (barring launch pad accidents). That, and their careers are usually quite short. Unlike airline pilots. They are exposed to quite high…
But then, Seth once made a bet with me that by now we would have AI's. Although I do personally think he's spot on. We will, eventually, detect, at least, evidence of another radio-using civilisation. I think we…
Pointless question. It isn't their business model.
A nice machine, but Ubuntu is not the only fruit. I use and like it myself but as many here have already pointed out, developers will either reconfig/reinstall everything or put something completely un-Ubuntu on it. I…
I was ten. Was allowed to stay up all night on the sofa to watch it. I'll never forget it. Still vivid memories in black and white flickering images and commentary by James Burke and Sir Patrick Moore.
Does anyone else recognise this as totally manufactured propaganda? Some of the statements here are ludicrous and make no sense. Its as believable as Indiana Jones hiding in a fridge and walking away unscathed. Jeez --…
"All I want to do is feed myself. Why on earth do I need to have so many different things to do it?" Because good help is so hard to find.
"One of the flaws of Vim is that it takes quite a bit of configuration to make it behave in a decent way. The defaults are backwards-compatible with vi (i.e. older than most college students)" Older, not only, than most…
This is amazing. It has quite made my day.
I think its a fairly safe bet to say quite a few things will disappear by 2020.
Is this all these people have the time to do?
All engineers of any discipline need mathematics. You can't do engineering of any sort without it. Surely. Although a lot of coders (as opposed to software engineers) don't need anything more day-to-day than basic…
Why was the decision taken to have all-cap menus when caps are less legible than lower or title case? It flies in the face of typographic and UI standards well established for ages. Like the ribbon - its disturbing. Who…
