Publishers win control over playback hardware market which probably outweighs the loss, or they would have stopped doing it.
It could be combination of #1 and #2, use blockchain for names and federation for actual content, then it will be easy to switch providers, just add new name to blockchain and remove old one.
Can you give a good argument, why computer owner shouldn't be able to control what her computer is doing? Why computer should not serve its owner best interest and instead serve interests of media companies?
