This. I had a huge problem with static shocking my desk in the dry winter air, causing my monitor to blank out for a few seconds. A small, quiet ultrasonic humidifier completely eliminated the problem. On a side note,…
Yep, there is always the human factor. Leave a USB drive in a parking lot, someone will insert it. You don't even need an obvious drive anymore, a malicious cable will suffice.
I miss the days when the big security concern was quantum breaking contemporary encryption. Air gaps and local stacks are overdue for a comeback.
I'd forgotten about PageMaker. I was on my college newspaper staff and we used it for layout. It was a small college in the rural midwest, so the local newspaper ran our copies. They didn't use digital tools, so we…
Thanks for sharing - I hadn't seen that video. I'm a fan of Technology Connections on YT. I've sent his Nyquist-Shannon video to several friends: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWjdWCePgvA
I agree. A live chat support option, appropriately staffed, is often the most expedient way to get help. I work configuring contact center software. Chat agents are often more experienced, "tech savvy", and less…
Man, I miss webrings. I could rabbit-hole down a group of sites about a particular interest for hours.
I read 4 months of severance, plus 2 weeks per year of service (likely up to a maximum?), 6 months of health insurance paid, plus job placement services from a 3rd-party vendor. That's more than fair.
Funny... my roommates and I used "just" for comedic effect in college. I was stuck writing an algorithm and asked my more-experienced roommate for help. He briefly scanned my code and said, "well, you kind of just...…
If Elon can get enough publishers on board I'd gladly pay more than $8/mo. Maybe offer a tiered system. Or better yet, choose-your-own. $8/mo: Choose 2 $12/mo: Choose 4 $15/mo: Choose 6 etc. Then people vote with their…
At my last company, we had 12 identical Facebook apps working as service-to-service messaging integrations. They chose to have 12 apps due to data sovereignty reasons, separating implementations in different regions.…
I live near Carmel, Indiana, the roundabout capital of the US. Small ones, large ones, figure 8's, figure... double-peanut-looking things with elevated crossovers near interstate junctions. They work well and keep…
Having an absolute shit-show for a healthcare and education system falls under "not perfect". I'll freely admit a good many Americans (even most) would be better off living in Europe. But there are many of us that just…
"Freedom of Expression and Belief": US, 3/4. Germany, 4/4. Report invalidated.
France has similar restrictions. French courts tried to restrict eBay from selling Nazi memorabilia to French citizens. I don't like it. Which is why I choose to continue living in the US. It's not perfect by any…
Unintended by the legislators, maybe, but I'd wager this punitive reaction by Facebook is very intentional. Many EU businesses are going to have their commerce and customer service flows break 9 days before Christmas.…
They're trying to monetize WhatsApp through their Business API. They have a directory of Business Service Providers that can provide API access and integration services. Their partnership model is very convoluted and…
Thanks - that works for me. For a moment I thought Comic Sans was an ahead-of-its-time work of genius.
They gave that drone a chainsaw. What were they thinking??
I haven't written a blog about it, but it's a common experience for those building B2B integrations with Facebook. Also common is feature deprecation with replacement functionality gated (read: withheld) behind a closed…
This is scarily reminiscent of Facebook's App Review process. We submitted 8 identical Apps that, functionally, are just webhooks for Messenger events. All required documentation, justification for the two permissions…
If it's effective, I'd hope it would become widely available for future pandemics.
Only in the marketing world does "Magic" == "functional".
He worked for Microsoft years ago. Still an MVP all this time later.
No kidding... the Nobel committee seems to aim for nearly-posthumous far too often.
