Don't think it has to be an oxymoron. Look at Red Hat: fully 100% open source code, but a multi-billion $ revenue.
This is really interesting. I'm tempted to attach red LEDs to a battery and put it in the fridge. But it would be quite tricky to measure whether it works. (Almost impossible to do accurately, without different fridges.)
Disagree. If you screen your test drivers, you no longer have adequate testing. Your test drivers need to be representative (as much as possible) of the general population.
What do you use to have rsync on your phone? And did you have to root your phone to achieve any of this? Also, is there a tool to use duckdns or similar to assign a hostname to your phone?
Doesn't DNScrypt (DNS over HTTPS) fix this issue?
I used this at some point on my Fedora laptop. I had issues on some hotel APs where it didn't allow me to see the 'login page' of the AP. What's the way to circumvent this problem? I'm frequently on public wifi's, so I…
Pretty sure that Java 9 should still fully support apps written for older versions of Java. However, apps written specifically for Java 9 (e.g. using the new modules system) wouldn't work on older versions of Java.
Except Java 9 is already no longer supported. The next viable Java version after Java 8 is Java 11, which is an LTS version. Java 11 will come out around September this year. So in reality, this means organizations have…
Java 9 was released end of September 2017... That's less than 1.5 years to migrate all your apps (possible many hundreds) from Java 8 to Java 9. Way too short. In fact, Java 9 is already out of support (since last…
Yep, same for Red Hat's support for OpenJDK (which goes up to October 2020 for OpenJDK 8: https://access.redhat.com/articles/1299013).
The release date of Java 8 doesn't matter. Nor does the fact that they're working on Java 11 (which is only because Oracle just started doing fast releases). What matters is when Java 9 became available. I.e. how much…
Yep, I've used "I don't care about cookies" for a couple years now I think, it's been great. It's very rare that I see these pop-ups.
The extension "I don't care about cookies" prevents 99% of the useless "we use cookies" pop-ups.
But doesn't that mean you need to login again each time you go to a website? Sure, by saving passwords in Firefox it isn't a huge hassle, but a cookie is still more practical...
That makes it clear, thanks!
That's interesting. But how can an implementation be compatible with a codec, if a codec is not set in the stone -- i.e. if there are different versions of a codec?
Care to spell this out in more detail for those of us who don't know the relation between x265/h265/codec vs implementation/etc.?
Good point, hadn't thought of people listening to music at work :)
10K songs is limiting to you?! Wow, how/for what do you use Spotify? At a (low!) estimate of 4 minutes per song, if you listen to Spotify for 3hrs/day, it would still take you 222 days to listen to all of them once. Is…

Why AdNauseam instead of uBlock?
I read an article many many years ago explaining why software engineering can't be compared to mechanical engineering. I can't find it now, but one of its points of comparison was: if a nut isn't tightened enough on a…
