There is something to be said for having at least one 30 meter class telescope in the Northern hemisphere. There are parts of the sky which are never visible from Chile.
Your point about there being no universally recognized Native Hawaiian representative organization is a very good one. There's no group or finite set of groups, that the TMT could reach an agreement with (by providing…
Actually, when I was a Fed worker, I was told that browsing porn sites was one of the very few things that could lead to immediate termination, without the usual Civil Service procedures (which take years to play out).
I think characterizing the Challenger launch decision as murder is unfair. At worst it was manslaughter.
There are things which are provably impossible. No amount of future cleverness will change that. It is, for example, impossible to find three nonzero positive integers A, B and C for which the cube of A plus the cube of…

Another big problem is that 401Ks have a "longevity risk". Saving as an individual, you must save enough to handle the very remote possibility that you will live past age 100. A pension fund, on the other hand, can…
Yes, there were many witchhunts. But they concerned (almost always false) accusations of child abuse, not child pornography. If you posted a picture that was purported to depict child abuse, but which was in no way…
The neo900 is so late that it doesn't really matter at this point whether it is ever released at all. You'll have to be a pretty hardcore fan to pay about $1000 for a phone with amateur software and circa 2011 hardware…
That means they'll have onboard countermeasures for surface-to-air missiles.
I've had something close to this for years with my N900 (circa 2009). It detects when I am at home or work (via WIFI), and mounts its file systems on my laptops via sshfs. I can run Debian apps on my N900, and have the…
