On the other hand, spending most of your time learning new syntax as opposed to actually solving creative problems makes one more like a glorified factory worker.
Care to share type some examples of data you've found that was used to produce financial forecasts?
Why is YipitData not very good?
Very very early was a decade ago when they were looking for investors :)
Me too. I always tend to wake up the exact same time (right down to the minute) every single morning, no matter how early or late I sleep. And I don’t set an alarm clock and use blackout curtain.
What are some examples of interesting market analysis you can do this with this data?
“Today it's nothing that any HNer taking CS classes at university couldn't do over spring break.” How can any HNer do this if it relies on classified metadata? And how does Palantir even get this classified metadata?…
What I find irritating is this constant portrayal of them as this “secret, data mining, all-knowing” technology company that can predict anything. even though everyone saying they don’t know how Palantir works under the…
Also the fact most US maps show Alaska and Hawaii semi-separately makes me think its 50 plus 2.
A Mandela effect that stuck with me was that North/South Korea were detached islands a bit south of Japan, but detached from China. That and the fact the US has 52 states not 50
Yep I am calling man-made gems “real” diamonds from now on. Der Bers, take that! (I hope your social listening catches this)
I would do that too. But the notion of getting paid for your data, when its worth so little by itself is not appealing.
But the value of my data alone probably is worth less than a dollar to Google and Facebook. Given the choice of getting paid a dollar, or using it for free (in exchange for them using my data), I would choose the…
this is true. Take 10 million couples and maybe 1 in 10 million, this happens, and this is what we hear in the news. We never hear about the wife that lives 10 more years after their 85+ year old husband dies.
Also, it's much easier to jump from 10 employees to 40, rather than from 1000 to 4000. So this list is very biased.
Reminds me very much of what Eckhart Tolle says. “You are not your personal history. You are not your story.”
In addition to ETFs, why not go 1 step further? Offer hedge funds too. Amazon has a ton of data on which consumer brands are overperforming every quarter. Use that data to make investment decisions.
No thanks, I'll take tax shelter over all of the above :)
Yes, there is often times a lot of money to be made (see Buffer and their dependency on the Twitter api). People say you shouldn’t start a business depending on a 3rd party, but what if your only profitable idea depends…
Is there such a thing 'escrow as a service' in face to face transactions?
I agree. That ship has sailed long ago for me. I actually liked Google Talk, when it was incorporated to your email. Then they came out with something called Hangouts that does GodKnowsWhat.
There is an opportunity cost in playing though. There might be a 10% chance of $1 million but what if it required giving up $100,000 in opportunity costs?
I have this issue as well. I just over-allocate nodes to my cluster so every node is comfortably below a disk usage threshold rather than waste time on optimizing this.
Nobody gets fired, but nobody gets promoted either.
