No, I agree, but you specifically mentioned "science-fiction" in the second post, and implicitly denied even their existence in the first post. I think there's a reasonable distance between that, and economic…
The Be would be inside the (radioactive) reactor vessel, which already has extremely strict isolation requirements. I believe it's accessed and maintained with robotics. As for the change, I'm just an interested…
I'm not sure I understand what's 'science-fiction' about lead or beryllium?
> you would need 100% efficiency to be able to breed your own tritium How so? As I understand it, the breeding reaction is exothermic (Li-6 + n -> He-4 + T) so all you need are neutrons, for which (as someone pointed…
Three years in, and it's working great. We're different people with different work styles, but get the job done with tons of respect on both sides. The only difference is that the friendship is perhaps at a sightly…
Emphasis not just in the narrow sense of showing intense emotion, but rather the general concept of giving a sentence rhythm and prosody, often to highlight a wry or ironic situation. Your analysis is correct that GP…
Are you thinking just of roundabouts that include a raised middle and/or central reservations on approaching roads? In general, roundabouts need no more space and cost than a regular road would, see e.g.…
While skin-in-the-game is a good tool for problems of this general class, the editor has said that refundable fees would not be workable in this particular case due to issues with payment providers[1]. [1]…

> you will always need at least a small fission reactor to breed some tritium The idea for future designs is to breed Tritium in the blanket surrounding the vessel. This obviates the need for external sources. >…
Personal anecdote, but since Ogham has been available in Unicode, I've seen the odd person start being interested in it to write out names, exclamations, etc. It feels like a small previously-closed gate has been opened…
Just a note that you've framed the question as "without JS turned on" but it's not always a choice; there are people who don't have access to sufficiently new hardware or reliable telecoms that it will work as intended.…

This question seems to be becoming more popular lately. My own understanding is that most people are apprehensive about killing because it involves denying another being self-actualisation and/or causing its suffering,…
This is a ridiculous straw-man take and you know it. Please aim for helpful discussion instead of empty sarcasm.
Apologies if my earlier post came off as peevish. I would not want your comment to be removed, and to my mind there is nothing sexist about it. I am just constantly surprised that, in a community that seems to pride…
I'm surprised an assertion this strong with zero attestation and the hint of pseudoscientificism is still alive on HN. Anyone living through the 00s (and perhaps even still today) will recognise rising intonation as a…
One thing I don't understand about what this page seems to suggest: shouldn't there be a bright ring of starlight at some non-zero angle away from dead ahead? Given a finite collection of objects out to a certain radius…
This may be just me being odd, but I alternate the direction of my belt roughly once per week. Otherwise, it gets stretched at only the top, and as a result becomes warped and uncomfortable.
I pictured it as more that being in a social atmosphere means someone is more likely to relax and let their practised subconscious take the lead, than give it their full attention and perhaps be too critical or…
Oh yeah, that's a fair point, I have encountered the input lock issue before. Hopefully it will be fixed in future. VLC also works for me from the start, but seems to lag at higher resolutions, hence fiddling to get…
I see the misunderstanding that D&I is about priority hiring based on certain characteristics over and above merit crop up a distressing amount. Every initiative that I have taken part in has explicitly abjured such…
I've seen an increasing amount of Use of Weapons bashing over the last few years; personal counterpoint is that it's not just my favourite of the Culture, but favourite novel full stop.
"Cannot function in society" is something of an exaggeration. I have never used WhatsApp and never really suffered for it. The only issue I noticed is needing to check in with individual members of the board game group…
I am used to hearing this from software engineers who are secure in the knowledge that when they want to try out a concept, hardware time to do so will be cheap and readily available. At some point, you are going to…
