DDG results are a little “different” than Google’s but no worse. Like somebody else said, usually when DDG can’t find the answer neither can Google.
I’ll continue to use my critical faculties and exercise my own judgment as I see fit.
Downvote away, but the fearmongering is so tiresome (and has been for 30 years). The carbon emitters they want to eliminate are people. On geologic time scales the CO2 level has been way way higher than it is today and…
I don't know that they've accepted the harmlessness of it as much as raised the white flag on the fact that it's too widespread to be shut down, even if they wanted to.
Maybe I'm cynical, but I see "increase competition," but then see "put stronger safeguards in place" and assume that the regulations will be written in such a way that no upstart competitors can possibly abide by them,…
“Harmonic Donkey Transfer” would be a good band name or album title.
Vetted custodial staff with security clearances exist! As far as custodial pay goes, having a TS/SCI is probably going to put you in the top tier, it pays to stay out of trouble sometimes. The security risk is a good…
George Floyd’s toxicology report taken after his death indicated fentanyl (and methamphetamine, and THC). https://famous-trials.com/george-floyd/2648-george-floyd-the...
I find a lot of the criticism of healthcare today to be misguided. Why would healthcare be inexpensive? Go into a clinic today and there’s a legion of professionals who attend to each patient. Each of them has years of…
DC generators work essentially the same as an AC alternator (motor in reverse). You can get AC-DC conversion by hooking these up to one another, just connect the rotors together.
I think English is generally under-rated but the phonetics are a mess, something I appreciate more now that I’m teaching my sons to read. This poem is a classic example: https://icaltefl.com/dearest-creature-in-creation/
I’ve wondered if it would be useful to have formatting/highlighting be part of the language rather than something determined after the fact, for example italicized vars could be immutable, bold for shared, have literal…
Can only patch so many buffer overflows, off-by-one errors, format string vulnerabilities, integer overflows, race conditions, use-after-free errors, etc, before it gets to be a bit tiring. Safer alternatives exist.
I was kind of curious about this as well, though I suppose if a politician’s account was compromised it could cause some pretty major embarrassment or maybe even conflict. Are DMs a thing on Twitter? Having those…
This is a bit hyperbolic - unless you mean excess deaths caused by obesity, heart disease and diabetes because of how abundant food has gotten. But starvation is less of a problem anymore, largely because of…
I’ve had great luck with a mixture of high-concentrate vinegar, a little dish soap, and some salt. It absolutely puts Roundup to shame. This mix is non-selective though so be careful around the plants/grass you want to…
I think the move to Intel was critical for the revival of the Mac because it gave Windows users an off-ramp if they wanted to try out the Mac hardware without going all-in with OSX. Boot Camp made it safe for Windows…
In that time I think we see a pretty big decline in the ratio of boys:girls graduating college too, no?
Why are differentiated classes such a taboo? I feel like a more trades-oriented approach with kids who don’t have the desire, motivation or aptitude for college would lead to more engagement and give those kids a better…
Counterpoint: Star Wars Special Editions.
Nobody’s stopping you from starting a anarchist syndicate or commune or kibbutz or whatever. They are out there, but I don’t think they are any kind of utopia.
Just drink it straight. Municipal water (with few exceptions) is already filtered, treated, and regularly-tested for contaminants. It’s an insidious message from the bottled water industry that tap water is somehow…
Eh, I’d argue the opposite: developers expect the end-user to rely on Stack Overflow or perusing GitHub issues to figure out how to use their product, instead of making easy-to-use products.
I’ve been wondering if SWE pay rates have been artificially high for a while due to easy lending - it will be interesting to see if your prediction comes true. Probably a lot of SW companies out there right now are…
How is physical strength unimportant? Stronger people are harder to kill (h/t Rippetoe) and improved strength also helps to avoid carpal tunnel syndrome and neck/back pain for those of us at a computer all day.
