I'm not even sure the first part is. I logged into a Guest Account on my Mac and the default for 'New tabs open with:' is the 'Start Page', which is a blank page with history, bookmarks, frequently visited, etc.

Waymo employees are still Googlers effectively. They ride the same buses, eat in the same cafeterias, go to the TGIF meetings, etc.
I use case-insensitive autocomplete (with zsh), and don't see myself switching back anytime soon.
