This feels like an unwarranted strawman. There are plenty of reasons for researchers to share openly at times and plenty of times it makes sense to wait until the meal is ready to serve before publishing.
Even folks in the industrial space are part of the community I tend to find. Most people my age found their way in through the open source community.
You can take the old mainboard and slot it into a cheap case and run it like a slim pc.
